| What the Bible Teaches: A Thorough and Comprehensive Study of what the Bible has to Say Concerning the Great Doctrines of which it Treats.Who is God? Omnipresent. Omnipotent. Eternal. Just. It's easy to recite a list of God's attributes, but what does the Bible mean by them? This book will help you to grasp both what God is like, and how He has revealed Himself in Scripture. It also gives thorough discussion of: the sovereign, imminent return of Jesus; the work of the Holy Spirit, the fallen nature of man, and God's offering of new life, the purpose and presence of angels; Satan's existence and nature, the character of Jesus. This book is ideal for a personal, intimate Bible study. Fortify your heart with truth as you study the essential doctrines of your faith! R. A. Torrey (1856-1928) was an American evangelist, pastor, educator, and writer. Held evangelistic meetings around the world with song leader Charlie Alexander. Called by D.L. Moody to head the Bible Institute of the Chicago Evangelization Society (now Moody Bible Institute); Dean of Bible Institute of Los Angeles; pastorates included Chicago Avenue Church (now Moody Memorial Church) and Church of the Open Door, Los Angeles. Wrote more than forty books. What the Bible Teaches is a remarkably useful compendium of biblical teaching on 53 major doctrines of the Christian faith. As you can see in this screenshot, the author uses a highly accessible outline format based on specific Scripture passages followed by propositions. So, for example, Chapter 1 addresses "God as Spirit" and uses key Scripture passages to demonstrate the truth of five propositions: * God is spirit. * That which is spirit may manifest itself in visible form. * God has in times past manifested Himself in visible form. * Etc. This book would be very useful in a classroom or inductive Bible study setting, or to give structure to your devotional study. It's a great way to get a handle on key biblical doctrines, using Scripture alone as a guide. As Torrey writes in the preface, "This work is simply an attempt at a careful, unbiased, systematic, thorough-going, inductive study and statement of Bible truth...The material contained in the Bible is brought together, carefully scrutinized, and then what is seen to be contained in it stated in the most exact terms possible." | |
